Abstract:Fethiye and Oludeniz Lagoon are regions of Turkey which attracts tourism and areunder the influence of pollution at the same time. Around Oludeniz lagoon region thereare 58 otels (hotels, motels) which have a total capacity of 6084 beds. Aproximately10.000 individuals visit Belcekiz region daily. The number of tourist increases up to22.000 for the whole Ölüdeniz region. The pollution parameters that effect ölüdeniz andits lagoon can be examined under two different headings; terrestrial and marinepollution.Terrestrial pollution is generally caused by the sewage from the hotels, intensive humanactivities and coastal usage. Marine pollution is caused by the effects of the daily tourboats and charter boats. In this study; sea water quality analysis were conducted on samples taken periodicallyfrom 10 different stations through 2003 to 2004 in Ölüdeniz and its surrounding region. Results were evaluated according to the bathing water quality and EU standards.Dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, temperature, transparency and wind directions weremeasured during sampling. Nitrate, phosphate and ammonium quantities were analizedin the laboratory. Total coliform, E.coli and chosen Streptococcus fecalis were analizedto indicate pollution. It is obvious that ölüdeniz is under intensive pollution threat. Terrestrial pollution is themajor pollution effect, to overcome this problem it is essential for the regional hotels tohave a common sewer system to get rid of the waste. For the pollution that comes fromthe bilge, solution would be to establish new port receiving facilities.
