Abstract:

This study analyzes Plato's approach about knowledge constructed on the differences between episteme and doxa consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, the "theory of ideas" as the basis and authenticity of Plato's philosophy is examined and also the existence of ideas is scrutinized in terms of periods. In the second chapter, in order to understand the difference between episteme and doxa, the metaphors such as "sun" "cave" and "line analogy" are clarified. However, immortality of soul and memorization (anemnesis) as important concepts to comprehend Plato's epistemologic understanding are elaborated. In the last chapter, Plato's Theitatus dialogue in terms of responding the question of "what is knowledge" is examined and Plato's attempt to show the possibility of definition of knowledge without applying to ideas is tried to be exposed. In conclusion, it is expressed that Plato's ultimate end about the question of knowledge is "what knowledge is not" rather than "what knowledge is". Key Words: Plato, episteme, doxa, knowledge, Ideas.
