Abstract:

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a wide-bandgap semiconductor material, and it is an excellent photocatalyst. It is a cheap, non-toxic material and has good chemical and mechanical stability. Due to these properties, TiO2 materials have been the subject of many applications such as sterilization, electrochromic devices, gas sensors, photo-voltaic panels, self-cleaning glasses, cement, and textiles. TiO2-based super-hydrophilic and self-cleaning surfaces is being studied by many research groups. However, compared to plain TiO2 coating structures, TiO2 nanocomposite materials doped with polymer and carbon-containing compounds self-clean faster and turn into a super hydrophilic structure. In the light of this information, in this study TiO2 nanocomposite structures were obtained by sol-gel method and their characterization was carried out. In the experimental process, liquid materials of titanium isopropoxide (C12H28O4Ti) and acetyl acetone (CH3COCH) and ethanol were brought into solution and used as the starting material. After mixing process, polymer and carbon containing components were added as additives. All the solutions were mixed in the magnetic stirrers until homogeneity was obtained. The glass substrates were cleaned in accordance with standard cleaning procedures with an ultrasonic bath and coated as the thin films using the spin coating method. The characterization of the TiO2 nanocomposite coatings was carried out. At the end of the experiments, information about self-cleaning mechanisms was obtained by producing super-hydrophilic materials.
