Abstract:

SUMMARY Studies on Population Structure of Some Soft Coral (Gorgonian) Existing in Northern Aegean Sea In this study the gorgonian species living in the Turkish territorial waters of the Northern Aegean Sea and their distribution along the Turkish coasts are determined. The aim is to contribute to recognize the biodiversity of Turkish Seas and to make a baseline for the studies on the biology, reproduction, distribution and conservation of the gorgonians. The study was carried out between 12 May 1999 and 26 May 2002 at nine different stations characterizing the region. A standard SCUBA equipment had been used for the scanning of the area. A total of three species (Eunicella singularis, Eunicella cavolinii, Paramuricea clavata) belonging to two families were identified. Two of these species (E. singularis and E. cavolinii) are new records for the Turkish seas. The depth range and type of the substrates of the examined species have similarities with the previous studies VI
