Abstract:SUMMARYBALLAST WATER SAMPLINGS IN ISTANBUL PORTSBallast water has been used since the late 1870?s in cases where ships are not fullyloaded in order to submerge the propeller and rudder in the water, to operate effectivelyand to control the trim and increase the stability. With the intake of ballast, aquaticorganisms in the water are pumped on board into the ballast tank.Ballast water sampling is very important for biological invasions risk management. Thehuman mediated transfer of harmful organisms via shipping, specifically via ballastwater transport leading to the loss of biodiversity, alteration of ecosystems, negativeimpacts on human health and some regions economic loss, has raised considerableattention to this topic in the last decade.Although there has been no ballast water program in Turkey, Turkish water includesone of the busiest shipping ways in the world and related problems are very importantfor Turkey. In this study, ballast water samples were taken from ballast tanks from 7 vessels thatentered Istanbul Ports and examined. From the examination of the samples, 15zooplankton species belonging to 6 classes and 61 phytoplankton species belonging to 6classes were identified. 200 color photographs were given belonging to identifiedspecies. It is considered that this study will be beneficial on ballast water management andevaluated in point of biologically.ix
