Abstract:

Monachus monachus (Hermann, 1779) IN FOÇA AREA. In this research, the areas bearing habitat features for Monachus monachus (Hermann, 1779) were searched in Foça, a pilot region for the project of Mediterranean Monk Seal, 7 caves and 7 shelters were found as a result. At the same time, in this research area fauna and flora have also been examined. In the area around the caves 2 species of flora belongs in 1 Family, 1 Order, 2 Classis, 2 Phylum and also 29 species of fauna belongs in 19 Family, 4 Order, 8 Classis and 7 Phylum have been found. On the other hand, 7 different species of fauna have been observed inside the caves. Some interviews were made with the local fishermen showing that in 1991; (max.) 29 times, in 1992; 14 times and in 1993; 5 times the seals were observed. Besides, according to these interviews, 3 different seals were defined in Foça and the seals were mostly observed in Orak and İncir islands. In Foça region, in order to find seal individuals, direct observations were made, no seal were seen. For that reason the areas between Foça-Karaburun and Foça-Mordoğan were also searched. Compared to Foça, more seal observations were made by the fishermen in Karaburun and Mordoğan in 1992. 3 Seal photos taken in Foça on different dates were found out. The researches made on the Fishing effort of the area, the fishing methods, the aquatic products caught, the fishing areas and the fishing gears were determined. The size of the damages that were occured in the nets are searched. It was determined that the area was influenced by the fishing that was made by using purse sein nets, trawl and gill nets. Out of 87 harmed gill nets examined during the study, only 20 included seal damages. Beside this, in the area near the potential seal habitats, some fishing activities that can cause stress for the seals were observed. Observing that the important seal habitats are under the effect of tourism activities, it's been determined that the protection of the species should be given more importance.
