Prof. Halim KAZAN

Prof. Dr. Halim Kazan is one of Turkey’s leading scholars and researchers, currently serving as the Head of the Department of Business Administration at the Faculty of Economics, Istanbul University. Playing a pioneering role in the fields of business and economics, Kazan has made significant contributions to academic literature through his multidisciplinary work in production management, marketing, logistics, management information systems, entrepreneurship, and innovation management.

He began his academic career in 1990 as a research assistant at the Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Selçuk University (Niğde). He later served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Education, Niğde University (1994–1997), and as an assistant professor at the Department of Business Administration, Aksaray Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Niğde University (1997–2003).

During this period, he held several key administrative positions, including Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports at Niğde University (1995–1999), Director of the Vocational School (1996–1999), Head of the Department of Economics (2001–2003), and Vice Dean (2001–2003).

Between 1999 and 2001, he conducted academic research at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, The Lally School of Management & Technology in the United States, gaining valuable international experience and deepening his expertise in production and technology management.

From 2003 to 2014, he served at the Gebze Institute of Technology (currently Gebze Technical University), Faculty of Business Administration, where he worked as an assistant and then associate professor, while also serving as Chair of the Department.

Since 2014, Prof. Dr. Kazan has been a faculty member at the Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Economics, Istanbul University, where he continues his academic work and currently serves as the Head of Department.

Prof. Dr. Kazan’s research spans a wide range of topics, including quantitative methods, production management, logistics management, management information systems, production and service systems, entrepreneurship, and innovation management. His work provides an academic perspective on the dynamics of the business world and offers interdisciplinary solutions to contemporary organizational and managerial challenges.

Prof. Dr. Halim Kazan is a distinguished scholar recognized for his research productivity, citation impact, and academic leadership in his field. To date, he has authored 105 scientific publications, of which 11 are indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) and 9 in Scopus. His works have received more than 1,350 citations in Google Scholar, 184 in WoS, and 164 in Scopus, reflecting strong international visibility and scholarly influence.

His h-index scores are 17 in Google Scholar, 6 in WoS, and 4 in Scopus, demonstrating consistent academic impact across major databases. Prof. Kazan has supervised 52 graduate theses (14 doctoral and 38 master’s) and participated in 13 externally funded research projects. These accomplishments illustrate his active contribution to both academic advancement and societal development.

According to international academic rankings, Prof. Kazan ranks 7th out of 580 within Istanbul University, 270th out of 4,179 in Turkey, 7,073rd out of 29,646 in Europe, and 18,379th out of 96,010 worldwide. Prof. Dr. Halim Kazan has served as principal investigator on various research and applied projects supported by public institutions, local governments, and universities. These projects have contributed to interdisciplinary areas such as social entrepreneurship, regional development, environmental innovation, open innovation strategies, and youth policy.

His work began with the “Volunteer and Social Youth Project” supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, followed by projects such as the Strategic Planning Guide for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Mapping Istanbul’s Ahi Heritage, and the Establishment of the Ahisanat Design Workshop, all of which focused on cultural and social development.

Other major projects led by Kazan include “Entrepreneurship Enlightens Küçükçekmece,” “Istanbul Investment Decision Support System,” “The Impact of Environmental Innovation Activities on the International Competitiveness of Firms: The Case of the Chemical Industry in the Marmara Region,” and “The Effect of Open Innovation Strategies on Business Performance: An Application on Turkey’s Top 500 Industrial Enterprises.”

In addition, the “My Neighborhood Istanbul” project, supported by the Istanbul Development Agency, stands out as a key example of promoting local development and community participation. University-funded studies such as “The Impact of Eco-Innovation Practices on Financial and Environmental Performance” and “Examining Employees’ Social Life Attitudes by Demographic Characteristics Using Optimal Scaling Techniques” have provided new insights into business performance, sustainability, and organizational behavior.
