Prof. Mahmut ÇALIŞKAN

He graduated from Ankara Yenişehir Health College. After graduation, he worked in the computerized brain tomography unit at Ankara Numune Hospital and Ankara Traffic Hospital. He completed his undergraduate education at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, METU. He started his academic career as a Research Assistant at METU. He won the Goverment International Faculty Member Training Program scholarship and started his doctoral studies at the Genetics Department of Leeds University, England, and graduated from the same unit with the degree of PhD. He worked as a Post-Doc for a while at the Genetics Department of Leeds University to train undergraduate and graduate students. When he returned to Turkey, he started working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Mustafa Kemal University. He was appointed as an Associate Professor in 2001 and as a Professor in 2006 in the same unit. He established the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Biology Department of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at MKU and enabled undergraduate and graduate studies to be conducted there. In 2014, he was appointed as a Professor in the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Science at Istanbul University. He served as the Head of the Department of Biology at Istanbul University between 2015-2021 and as the Director of the Institute of Science at Istanbul University between 2018-2024. During his tenure as the Head of the Department, he ensured the establishment of the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Environmental Biology and Ecology in the Department of Biology. He continues his work in the department of biotechnology as the founding head of the department.
