Proje Özeti

Abstract

Objective- The aim of the present study is to be able to have another test which can be used in Turkey as a diagnostic tool while examining and evaluating the population about the relevance and frequency of eating disorders in the community. And to make the reliability and validity studies of the EDDS-DSM5 version and to be able to use EDDS as a diagnostic and statistical tool in the evaluation of eating disorders in Turkey after these studies.

Method- There were total of 325 participants, 237 of them were females, 84 of them were males and 4 of them were non-binary, the sample was between the ages of  14-33. The samples were randomly selected through an online survey. A demographic form, Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale-DSM 5 Version (EDDS), The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) were used as measures and the data was gathered on an online platform of Google-forms. All statistical analyses were completed through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, Version 24. Initially, data screening and normality check were carried out. Data were nonnormally distributed; therefore, nonparametric tests Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney U were used in order to measure the gender differences and Body Mass Index group differences respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation was conducted with full sample for examining the factor structure of EDDS.

Results- Mann Whitney U-tests revealed significant gender differences on the EDDS symptom composite scores. Female participants reported higher scores compared to male participants. Kruskal–Wallis analysis was conducted to examine the differences on EDDS symptom composite scores according to the categories of BMI. Significant differences were observed between BMI categories and mean scores of the EDDS symptom composite. In an initial attempt to explore the factor structure, EDDS was analysed by principal component factor analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation. The overall Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin measure of sampling adequacy was 0.87. The Bartlett’s test for sphericity produced a significant result. The results of correlational analysis between EDDS symptom composite scores and EDE-Q total scores indicated a significant correlation.

Conclusion- The findings, while preliminary, suggests that, EDDS is a reliable and valid instrument for the Turkish sample. Self assessment method for eating disorders give mostly parallel results with clinical interviews, especially in detecting concrete features of eating disorders such as self induced compensatory behaviors.
