Özet

Media, today, has an important role and effect on the construction of reality and its contingency with the discourse being created and also represented by itself as it has the power to reach every level of the society. Within this concept, the means of the media vary on a large scale, as printed and visual manner, such as newspapers, magazines, television, movies and internet. Today both online and hardcopy newspaper agencies have a great impact on shaping the speech of society; hence on constructing reality. One of the scientific theories and methods used in research of various means of media which consists of reality presented to the society is the linguistic oriented discourse analysis, and the research on this field mainly concentrates on news taken from the newspapers. CDA focuses on the role of the language in the production or reproduction of discourse and deals with power, dominance, ideology, with other aspects such as polarization between US and THEM. CDA studies are mainly based on media texts to examine the representations of specific events, actions or situations. The reason for this is the dominant role of media in the production of its own discourse and the power to reach every level of society using the various sources of mass media. The aim of this study is to determine the reality constructed by the Turkish press about Germany. The newspapers have more effective function compared to other types of discourses in the process of reception, legitimization and modification of the reality presented to the society since the press itself can reach every part of the society. The corpus is comprised of news that are published in Turkey’s highest circulation newspaper Hürriyet between 01.01.2011 and 31.03.2011, which deal with Germany’s visa regulation for Turkey. The news has been examined with the CDA methods of Teun van Djik (2013; 2015), Norman Fairclough (2003; 2012) and based on theories of Siegfried Jäger (2009). Moving towards the visa regulation reports of Germany in corpus, this paper also tries to determine the discourse about Germany in the selected Turkish newspaper, respectively Turkish media.
