Observations on Some Lost Crocus Taxa of Turkey and Some Thoughts on Conservation of Wild Species

Abstract

This study outlines the morphologic characteristics of three Crocus taxa that have neither been collected since their description in 1994 nor been previously deposited in any herbarium in Turkey: Crocus albocoronatus (Kernd.) Kernd., Pasche & Harpke, Crocus kerndorffiorum Pasche, and Crocus paschei Kernd. To this end, we took measurements of morphological features, investigated leaf anatomy and prepared composite images for the two valid taxa, Crocus albocoronatus and Crocus kerndorffiorum. As for Crocus paschei, we propose that it is synonymous with Crocus adanensis. Through the lens of these three taxa, we outline difficulties regarding the collection and study of bulbous plants, and the authors’ views and some recommendations.

Çalışmada yayınlandıkları 1994 yılından bu yana Türkiye’den herhangi bir herbaryum kaydı bilinmeyen, yeniden toplanamamış üç çiğdem taksonunun; Crocus albocoronatus (Kernd.) Kernd., Pasche & Harpke, Crocus kerndorffiorum Pasche ve C. paschei Kernd., morfolojik özellikleri verilmiştir. Bu amaçla adları geçerli olan iki çiğdem taksonu Crocus albocoronatus ile Crocus kerndorffiorum için morfolojik ölçümler yapılmış, yaprak anatomisi çalışılmış ve bileşik görüntü resimleri hazırlanmıştır. Crocus paschei türü ise Crocus adanensis’in sinonimi olarak ilan edilmiştir. Bu üç takson özelinde soğanlı bitkilerin toplanıp, çalışılması hususunda sorunlar, yazarların görüşleri ve bazı çözüm önerileri sunulmuştur.
