Ethem Pertev, who graduated from the Pharmacist class of Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Mülkiye-i Şahane in 1311 (1895), started his professional life by opening a pharmacy in Istanbul. In addition to the health service he provided from his pharmacy by following modern methods, he also played an active role in various fields of his profession such as education, pharmaceutical production and professional associations, and also made initiatives and contributions. He enabled many pharmacy students, including Prof. Dr. Turhan Baytop, to do internship in his pharmacy. Sirop Pertev, which he first produced in the laboratory of his pharmacy and then in the pharmaceutical production laboratory he established, was the first Turkish pharmaceutical drug to be widely produced and commercialised. He was the first pharmacist in Turkish Pharmacy to start the production of drugs in the form of fabrication. In 1914, he was a member of the first Turkish Codex Commission. He was the president of the Turkish Pharmacists Association for a period. Since one of the societies he was a member was the Vienna Society of Pharmacists and he was able to speak French and German, it is understood that he closely followed the professional developments abroad. As a result of his professional work, he has been awarded national and international medals.
He was always at the forefront of social services in addition to his profession. He was among the founders of the Turkish Red Crescent Society and also took part in the founding of the Topkapı Fukaraperver Society. With his contributions during and after the wars, he facilitated treatment services and helped to take precautions against diseases and epidemics.
This study aims to provide detailed information about the life, works and contributions of Ethem Pertev, who is famous for his contributions and support to both his profession and the public, as well as the medicines and products he produced.
