XVth century sources and his epitaph inform that Atik Sinan, the architect of Fatih Mosque, was beaten to death in the dungeon he was prisoned after the completion of the construction. The narratives regarding to the tragedy of Atik Sinan, who shared the same fate with Sinimmar, the legendary architect of the Islamic mythology, who rewarded with death, were flavored with various imaginative details in the company of several tales over time and his fate was consciously or unconsciously distorted, the attention was diverted to other subjects and sometimes directly rejected or even censored. Blended with legends, the popular culture creation Aitk Sinan, has thus replaced the Atik Sinan based on academic researches. This study aims to discuss the tragedy of an Ottoman architect, Atik Sinan, with facts and manipulative myths and to sort out the narratives of popular culture and primary sources based on eyewitness accounts.
