Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly evolving field in healthcare, and it holds a significant place in dentistry. ChatGPT, a chatbot developed by OpenAI, offers various applications in dentistry. This review discusses the applications, features, and challenges brought by ChatGPT in the field of dentistry. ChatGPT has several positive effects on dentistry. It enhances patient satisfaction by effective communication with patients. The customization of educational materials and assistance in scientific writing and literature review support dental professionals. Its multilingual service capability is a significant advantage for interacting with patients in different languages and keeping up with global literature. Furthermore, it functions as clinical support in treatment planning and diagnosis, thereby improving the quality of patient care and making dental practice more efficient. However, the applications of ChatGPT in dentistry also bring certain challenges. The possibility of mistake in diagnosis and treatment recommendations by ChatGPT raises concerns about patient safety. Additionally, issues related to ethics and privacy cannot be overlooked. The risks associated with ChatGPT processing patients' data pose significant legal and ethical concerns. In conclusion, while the use of ChatGPT in dentistry offers considerable benefits to both patients and dental practitioners, the challenges and risks introduced by this new technology must also be considered. This review thoroughly examines the applications of ChatGPT in dentistry, highlighting its potential and limitations.
