Literature, as a social institution, reflects, forms, or disrupts the moral, cultural, and political values of the public, and thus affects political philosophy. Both fields portray and critique issues like human rights, equality, and liberty. We will explore the sense of empowerment – or often disempowerment – that authors have experienced in the public sphere in the act of writing and circulating pamphlets, political treatises, literary and theoretical texts to inform themselves and their fellows about social justice. This involvement in politics have influenced literature; and at the same time, literary and theoretical texts have shifted political debates on identity, social order, and otherness. We will study texts from Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Mary Wollstonecraft, Gwendolyn Brooks, Judith Butler, Gloria Anzaldua, among others.
