This course aims to examine representations of bodies in literature and to analyze emotions through theories of ethics and affect. We will begin by reviewing disability studies and reflecting on texts from the seventeenth century to discuss meanings and significance of the body, bodily sensations and affect in literature. Each week, we will focus on the nature of a specific affect to pair it with a specific concept such as disability, illness, maternity, race and sexuality and their literary representations with texts ranging from the seventeenth- to the twenty-first century.
