Influencing social reforms and responding to postwar movements, science fiction as a genre has critiqued tradition, transformed cultures and politics through imagining alternative realities for the future. How does science fiction narratives accelerate such requisite cultural transformation? How much of our technological inventions do we owe to science fiction narratives? How do these texts foresee the ethical and political concerns of our day, and what solutions do they offer to our anxieties? This course aims to study science fiction texts and examine the influence of the creative visions of prominent science fiction authors on our current predicament.
