  • Ders İçeriği: The novel diverged from early prose fiction specifically in the eighteenth-century. As a genre, it addressed the (new) problems of the modern world in complex plots through minute depictions of daily life. In terms of content, early novelists were often concerned with a character’s “place” in society. This question about social status also came up in novels after 1770s, but novelists like Burney and Radcliffe problematized literary production, ways of seeing, and even the legal system in their fiction. After all, systemic change and revolution occurred as a result of seeing and imagining differently. How does this eventful interaction between writing and vision shape storytelling? How does the novel become a dominant form?
