Abstract

The adhesion of Escherichia coli to the laser textured surface (LTS) of 630 stainless steel were investigated in this study. The contact angles of the surfaces were measured by sessile drop method. Both laser textured and control (untreated) coupons were exposed to the E. coli culture for 48 h in a lab-scaled test system. Attached bacterial counts and produced carbohydrate amounts in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on LTS and control surface (CS) were compared to investigate the surface adhesion property of hydrophobic surface. The bacteria were found to be attached to the LTS later than on the CS. Also, the counts of sessile E. coli on the LTS were lower than that on the CS. In addition, it was determined that the carbohydrate amounts on LTS were significantly higher than the ones on CS (p< 0.01). It could be an indication that bacteria secrete more EPS to adhere to the hydrophobic surface.
