Özet

Abstract: To protect its Eastern border in Anatolia, the Byzantine Empire built various castles from the 7th and 8th Centuries on and they benefited especially from Armenian commanders in military subjects. One of these commanders who appears to be related with the Tzamandos Castle is George Melias. The castle is situated in Melik-Gazi Village, Pınarbaşı District in Kayseri. The presence of the Tzamandos Castle is first determined in sources about the Byzantine- Arab Wars in the 10th Century. Nothing specific can be said about its presence before this date. After the Battle of Manzikert the castle was first under control of the Danishmends and then the Seljuks. In the Medieval Turkish period it was used like a patrol for the safety of the Kayseri-Elbistan-Malatya commercial-military road, the Seljuk period Yabanlu market nearby and the surrounding caravanserais. Being used as a “dungeon” as wel, during the Dulkadiroğlu period the castle protected the treasury and the seraglio of the leader, Şehsuvar Bey.
