Abstract
This study aims to examine the effects of media's presentation of Syrian immigrants on the levels of dehumanization of Syrians, legitimization of collective violence against Syrians, and tolerance and positive affect toward Syrians among the native population living in Turkey, through the framing effect (Slothuus, 2008) and the echo chamber effect (Del Vicario et al., 2016). In the study, the framing effect was manipulated through the news content presented to participants, while the echo chamber effect was manipulated through the user comments presented below the news text. Accordingly, an experimental study with a 2 (comment: positive, negative) x 3 (text: positive, negative, neutral) factorial design was conducted, and data were collected from 236 participants. In addition to a demographic information form, the Ascent of Humanity, Collective Violence Beliefs, Outgroup Tolerance Scale, and Feeling Thermometer were used as data collection tools. Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) findings showed that positive user comments led to greater dehumanization of Syrians compared to negative user comments. Furthermore, reading a positive comment under a positive text led to greater legitimization of collective violence against Syrian immigrants compared to reading a negative comment under a positive text. Reading a negative user comment under a neutral text also led to greater legitimization of collective violence compared to reading a negative user comment under a positive text. Both the text and the comment being negative was found to lead to greater tolerance and positive affect toward Syrian immigrants compared to reading a negative comment under a neutral text. The findings are discussed in light of the relevant literature.
