History is to do with production of knowledge. This production is rea-
lized by the choice of the subject, the subjectmatter, the selected/recorded
events and the existing documents. In this process, reality is also defined.
Women’s history has detected the andro-centric structure of history, brin-
ging out its characteristics with various examples and has provided a cri-
tical approach to the production and circulation of this knowledge. With
a new method, a new interpretation, and a new construction, women’s
reality is decribed and defined accordingly.
Women’s history, as a discipline, has emerged out of the science of
history, especially enriched by the discipline of social history and nou-
rished by the theoretical and methodological contributions of political
scientists, economists, sociologists, anthropologists, literary scholars, that
is, almost all spheres of the social sciences. Women’s history or feminist
history writing should be considered as the total sum of all spheres in whi-
ch the historical material in these disciplines have been filtered through
the lens of the discipline of women’s studies. Moving along the path that
feminist theory and feminist methodology have opened, the power relati-
ons in between the sexes are questioned and various gender dynamics in
different historical epochs are revealed.
In my paper, I will try to give an inventory of the studies accomplished
starting from the 1990s in Turkey, both within the academia and outside,
covering the wide scope of works related to historiography, history of wo-
men’s movement, everyday life, politics, work life, women in the instituti-
ons, literature, art and biographies. Rather than a chronological account,
I want to critically evaluate the topics and epochs that these studies have66
concentrated on and the institutions that have promoted these studies. I
will both consult on the bibliographic studies and original works in this
area.
