Özet

This study explores the intergenerational transmission of physical and emotional abuse through the experiences and perceptions of victims of abuse. The convenience sampling method was used in the study conducted with 20 participants who were victims of physical and emotional abuse. In this descriptive phenomenological study, data were collected through individual in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using a phenomenological method. The results obtained from the research were grouped under the theme of “intergenerational transmission.” The theme of intergenerational transmission was divided into 4 subthemes: transmission of emotional abuse, transmission of physical abuse, reflections of intergenerational transmission on daily life, way of transmission of abuse and factors that mitigate the transmission of trauma. Emotional and physical abuse was found to be transmitted across generations. Intergenerational transmission of physical and emotional abuse was found to occur through internalized object relations, attraction to partners similar to the abuser, learning, attachment and parenting styles. The intergenerational transmission of physical and emotional abuse was reflected in the daily lives of the participants in the form of a tendency to recur in romantic relationships and actual recurrence in romantic relationships, feeling the need for primary and secondary mirroring, experiencing aggression in interpersonal relationships, and experiencing anxiety about passing the abuse on to future generations. Factors such as sibling support, identification with a non-abusive parent, and education were found to mitigate the intergenerational transmission of abuse.
