Abstract

This study is in the aim of assessing the position of Turkey in world agricultural market with the help of trade related indexes. Even though the share of agricultural exports has been decreasing gradually due to the acceleration of industrial exports since 1980s, agriculture is a traditional sector which continues to contribute positively to the current account balance of Turkey. However, this study reveals that some of the sub-sectors, such as edible fruits and nuts, which Turkey has comparative advantage in the world, began to lose their world market share in the last fifteen years. By comparing Turkey’s agricultural export growth with world export growth in Harmonized System two digit codes, it is argued that seven sub-sectors have exhibited a diminishing growth trend between the years of 2002-2017. Revealed comparative advantage index values further support this argument. It is also aimed at identifying those markets which these sub-sectors have lost their significance. Lastly, this study tries to discuss the role of possible factors such as real exchange rate, the position of competitors, and trade measures in the export composition and growth of Turkey.
