Abstract

determine alkali-silica reactivity of selected natural sands in different origin and composition. The study was carried out on natural sands that are widespread in the Marmara Region of Turkey. Samples were collected from sand quarries located in BlackSea Shore-Akpýnar Region, Çorlu, Muratlý and Sinekli Regions, Ýstanbul-Ömerli Region and Bursa-Mustafakemalpaþa Region, which provide a significant amount of fine aggregate for concrete production The mineralogical and chemical composition of the sands were firstly determined. Accelerated mortar bar test were then used to evaluate the potential alkali reactivity of the sands. As a result of this study; active silica (chert, chalcedony etc.), metamorphised quartz and rock particles are potentially deleterious for alkali aggregate reactions.
