Assessment of dental caries and periodontal parameters in Turkish twins

AIM To investigate dental caries and periodontal parameters in monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs and to examine the effect of genetic factors. METHODS The study samples were selected from the twin children between 3-15 years old who referred to Istanbul University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Pediatric Dentistry for their first dental examination. 59 monozygotic and 143 dizygotic twin pairs were examined. Following the clinical examination, the DMFS and dmfs, plaque and gingival index and bleeding on the probing were identified. Data entry and analyses were performed using statistical software (SPSS version 20, Chicago, IL). Data were described using frequency counts and percentages. Descriptive and inferential statistics were reported. RESULTS A total of 404 voluntary participants including 118 (29.2%) monozygotic and 286 (70.8%) dizygotic twins were examined. Gingival index scores were higher in MZ twins than DZ twins (42.4 % vs. 31.5%, p=0.0487). There were no statistically differences between MZ and DZ twins in the prevalence of DMFS/dmfs index, plaque index and bleeding on probing. CONCLUSIONS The importance of genetic factors in dental caries and periodontal diseases should be supported by twin studies
