The Misak-i İktisadî (Economic Pact) and Second Century of the Republic of Türkiye, Sayım Yorgun,Muhammed Erkam Kocakaya, Editör, Nobel Yayınevi, İstanbul, ss.71-90, 2026
Mustafa Kemal and his colleagues, who wanted to establish a modern and sovereign "national state" after the War of Independence, decided to
convene the Turkish Economic Congress in İzmir even before the Republic was declared. The Congress, which is an important economic milestone in
Türkiye's "modernisation", brings together different social strata. At the Congress, the greatest emphasis is placed on economic independence. It is
clearly stated that national sovereignty cannot be sacrificed for anything. It is emphasised that Türkiye can cooperate with foreign capital provided that
Türkiye's sovereignty rights are respected. The correspondence in classified documents from UK, which were later opened, shows that the world
received Mustafa Kemal's message. Nationally, the decisions taken at the Congress form the basis of the economic policies pursued in the 1920s. This
study analyzes the critical role of the Congress in the economic and social transformation of Türkiye in the 1920s.
