Comparison of chewing
performance and oral health related quality of life between patients with
implant overdenture and conventional complete denture
ABSTRACT
Aim: The aim of this study was to compare chewing performance, patient
satisfaction and oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) among edentulous
patients treated with two implant supported overdenture (IOD) and conventional complete
denture (CCD).
Materials and Method: Forty-four patients, 22 IOD and 22 CCD wearers
were included in this study. Chewing performance was evaluated with a color
mixing ability test by analyzing the standard deviation of hue (VOH, ViewGum).
Two different types of two colored gum; Vivident FruitSwing® “Watermelon and
Asai Grape” (gum1) and Hue-Check Gum® (gum2) were used. Participants were asked to chew the specimens
for 20 chewing cycles. OHRQoL was
determined with the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14), Oral Health Impact
Profile-Edentulous (OHIP-EDENT) and Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index
(GOHAI) questionnaires. A visual analog scale (VAS) was applied to evaluate
patient satisfaction. SPSS IBM 25.0 was used for statistical testing.
Results: The IOD group
comprised (65±5 years) 11 males and 11 females , CCD group (67±6 years) 16 males and 6 females. There was a statistically difference between
IOD and CCD groups in chewing test with gum2 (p<0.05). Although the difference is not significant
(p>0.05), chewing performance with
gum1 was also higher in IOD group than CCD group. The scores from all OHRQoL
measurements were statistically significantly different between IOD and CCD
groups. VAS scores (except pain) were
statistically different between IOD and CCD groups (p<0.05).
Conclusions: IOD treatment provide better chewing performance and significant improvement in OHRQoL and patient satisfaction than the CCD treatment.
