ABSTRACT
In the recent period, the developments in the field of energy have deeply affected both economical and social
structure. That the countries which want to ensure a more competitive, stable and sustainable development process;
they should develop their own energy policies and thus decrease their external dependence in terms of energy is
an acknowledged fact in all academic circles. On the other hand, efforts made by countries that are aiming to be
more powerful socially and economically in order to retain energy sources constitute an indicator of energy’s
importance. In addition, the countries should develop their own energy policies accordingly with no current deficit
in order to ensure a more competitive, stable and sustainable growth and thus decrease their external dependence
in terms of energy. As a consequence of industrialization and technological advancements, external dependence
of Turkey’s economy in terms of energy is gradually increasing. Turkey now questions whether using nuclear
energy instead of other alternative energy sources will be a solution to the current deficit which is caused by the
country’s external dependence in terms of energy. In order to meet its ever-growing energy demand, Turkey, as
the holder of the second largest thorium reserves in the world, should primarily choose a method of nuclear power
generation and form an energy policy by taking its renewable energy potential into consideration and including
other alternative energy sources in related calculations.
