Contributing environmental beam trawl and DNA metabarcoding in assessing biodiversity on some banks in high Aegean sea

Özet

The Aegean Sea has several banks that make this region very important for benthic biodiversity. However, the studies on these banks are limited. In May and September 2022 and 2023, surveys were conducted in the North Aegean Sea to better understand high sea marine biodiversity and coralligenous habitats which are key marine habitats in the Mediterranean Sea. Macrobenthic samples collected from four high sea banks included a total of 39 species: seven fishes, three porifera, ten crustacean, twelve mollusc, six echinoderm and one Brachiopoda. It has also been used in sequencing environmental DNA (eDNA) in addition to traditional sampling-based methods to characterize biodiversity in marine environments. We detected a total of 21 OTUs across all samples, and their eight OTUs were assigned to phyla, eight to classes, 14 to orders, 17 to families, 18 to genera, and 17 to species. These banks should be protected, especially against bottom trawling, due to their rich biodiversity and vulnerable coralligenous habitats.
