Özet

Laparoscopic surgery, with laparoscopic cholecystectomy taking the lead, has rapidly become widespread all over the world. One of the major advantages of laparoscopic cholecystectomy which has become the gold standard therapy of symptomatic gall bladder stones over classical open cholecystectomy is the reduction of postoperative pain and rapid return to normal life. In order to clearly define the pain after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, pain level and analgesia requirement of 72 noncomplicated laparoscopic cholecystectomy cases operated at Istanbul University, Istanbul Medical Faculty, General Surgery Department in 1995 was investigated during their postoperative stay at the hospital. Numeric Rating Scale was used to assess the pain level of the patients. There were 63 female and 9 male patients in the study. There was no need for analgesia for 31 (43%) patients, while opioid analgesia was necessary for only 2 (3%) patients. Other patients were managed with oral acetaminophen and oral nonsteroid antiinflammatory drugs or parenteral nonsteroid antiinflammatory drugs. Long operations, fascial sutures and extension of incisions were noted to increase postoperative pain. These data support the notion that instead of routine and unnecessary pain medication after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the patients should be carefully questioned about their pain levels and the appropriate type and dose of analgesia should be chosen.
