In the present study, the etiological agent that caused mortality in gold fish at an aquarium company located in Bursa in northwestern Turkey was identified. Diseased fish was lethargic, displayed loss of appetite, ascites and exophthalmia. An internal examination revealed that the kidney was surrounded by exudate as well as that both the spleen and the liver were pale. After microbiological examination of kidney, spleen and liver, gram negative, cytochrome oxidase, catalase and H2S positive rod shaped bacteria was identified as Shewanella putrefaciens. In addition, its identity was confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Histopathological examination of kidney, spleen and liver, revealed necrosis in kidney tubules and of hepatocytes and hemosiderin present in melanomacrophages. Isolates were sensitive to Gentamycin (120 μg), Florfenicol (30 μg), Sulfamehoxazole + Trimethoprim (25 μg), Enrofloxacin (5 μg) according to the antibiogram.
