Abstract

An Amberlite XAD-2 resin. functionalized with 5-palmitoyl-8-hydroxyquinoline, was prepared and used for the preconcentration of Fe(III), Cr(III), Cu(II), Cd(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Both batch and column sorption studies were carried out. The optimum pH range is between 4.5-6.0. for all the metal ions. All these metal ions can be desorbed with 2 mol 1(-1) HNO3 (recovery ratio 97-100%). The effect of various electrolytes on the sorption of these metal ions has been investigated. The enrichment factor has been found to be 50 for all seven metal ions for concentration level between 20-50 mug 1(-1). Simultaneous preconcentration and determination of all the metal ions is possible. The method has been succesfully applied to the determination of the heavy metals in Kucukcekmece Lake water samples (RSD 2.3-3.7%).
