Özet

Objective: It is recognized that binge eating in obese people is significant at clinical level and is deepening the problems relating to obesity. The object of this study is to determine the correlation of the binge eating in a group of obese women seeking treatment with the psychopathology of the women in the group and to study the group from the point of view of the cognitive function. Material and Methods: Ninety three obese women with a body mass index (BMI) 30 and above who applied to the Obesity Clinic of the Medicine Faculty of the Istanbul University and 43 women with normal body weight (BMI 18-24.5) as control group; min total 136 women, admitted to the study. All subjects were asked to complete the Questionnaire for Eating and Weight Patterns- Revised and divided into three groups as obese group with binge eating disorder (BED-O; n=43), obese group without binge eating disorder (non-BED-O; n=50) and the control group (n=43). All subjects were asked to complete the Automatic Thought Questionnaire (ATQ), the Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale (DAS), the Body Image Scale (BIS), the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT). Results: We found that the BED-O group got higher scores in the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire and Dysfunctional Attitudes Scale compared to the non-BED group. When we compared the groups based on their Body Image scores, we found that there were significant differences between BED-O, Non-BED-O and the control groups (p<0.001). When we compared the groups based on the subscales of the Brief Symptoms Inventory, we found significant differences (p<0.001). The BED-O group got the highest scores on all the subscales. Conclusion: The subgroup of obese women with binge eating is distinct from the subgroup of obese women without binge eating in terms of cognitive structure and psychopathology. We think that taking into account of this fact in the course of obesity treatment will be beneficial. © 2013 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
