Jose Ortega y Gasset'in yayınlanan ilk kitabı Don Kişot Üzerine Düşünceler idi. Kitapta Ortega Don Kişot'un çağdaşlığından bahseder. Ona göre Don Kişot 'derin' bir kitaptı çünkü okurlara aktif bir rol veriyordu ve komik bir eser görüntüsünün altında saklı gerçeği keşfetmeye götürüyordu. Böylece Ortega, gerçek her zaman dış görünüş peresinin altında kalır anlamında gelen 'aletheıa' kavramını yeniden ele alıyordu. The first book published by José Ortega y Gasset was Meditations on Don Quijote. In this book Ortega refers to Don Quijote's modernity and bases his arguments on the idea that the book is "profound" because it makes the reader take an active role and leads them to discover the truth hidden beneath the appearance of comedy. Thus, Ortega retakes the old concept of "aletheia" according to which the truth is always under de veils of the appearances. Although at that time all forms of art followed the concept of "imitation" of the nature, the autor moved away from such creations, wich were misnamed as "realistic", and inaugurated the modern novel with Don Quijote, wich followed the classic idea of "aletheia". This is the true objective of all works of art, according to Ortega, which is to help us discover the truth, to "iluminate" what is conceled.
