Abstract
This study aims to shed light on the social, economic and other effects in individual and community life, particularly physical and
mental health in anonymous and folk songs composed by minstrels about epidemic diseases.
In the study, the data obtained by scanning archives and sources on the subject were evaluated descriptively with a qualitative
approach. In the composition and transmission of folk songs, folk songwriters and minstrels, as creative sources and carriers of
the culture, expressed every event, emotion and thought that affected the individual/society in the age they lived, with literary-musical
genres such as folk songs, laments, and epics, and they inscribed their historical records in this way. In this context, within
the scope of the study, TRT’s folk music notation archive, folk music works and folk song stories compiled and published by researchers,
minstrel squabbles [their battle of words], the published/released musical performances such as albums, CDs, internet,
etc. were taken under examination. Then among them the works composed on cholera, plague, tuberculosis, smallpox, measles
and corona were identified and the effects of epidemics on the individual and society were revealed in the findings through these
selected texts.
As a result of the study, it has been seen that folk songs and/or folk song stories are important sources for obtaining information
about epidemic diseases and epidemic / health conditions in Anatolia from past to present. The examination brings together the
folk songs, epics and laments that were selected in this context and concludes that they predominantly address and process the
events caused by epidemics at different times, emotions such as pain, grief, sadness and despair reflecting individual and social
psychology.
