This paper aims to revisit collaborative decision making models, including participatory forms of uncertainty and risk assessment from the area of natural resource management and planning with a view to transpose them into the nanotechnology context. The focus will be on the following two questions: (i) what might be the benefits of using participatory approaches to uncertainty and risk assessment in the field of nanotechnology? and, (ii) how could exactly these approaches be incorporated in complex legal-institutional settings to realise thesepotential benefits?
