Abstract

The immune system plays an important dual role in the reproductive system. While it protects against infections, it also shows tolerance to preventing adverse reactions, such as rejection of the sperm or fetus. But sometimes, some immune responses, such as hypersensitivity, dysregulated cytokine responses, and acute or chronic inflammation, could adversely affect the fertility or even pregnancy in women, and impair the sperm production and quality, leading to infertility in men. One of the most important factors of inflammation, besides trauma, is infection. Viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infectious agents induce reproductive inflammation through diverse immunological pathways involving innate and adaptive immune responses, cytokine dysregulation, and tissue-specific immune imbalance. This chapter aims to present detailed and current information on the immunological basis of inflammation in the reproductive system, as well as the microbial agents, pathophysiology, clinical implications, and therapeutic approaches of infections that cause inflammation and affect reproductive health.
