Abstract

Feuilleton, in other words newspaper, serial was one of the most outstanding socio-cultural phenomenons of XIXth century in Spain and also the product of the publishing’s and literature’s market union. In the beginning Feuilleton was considered as the obedient imitation of its french origin up to its name.  But later with its divergent characteristics it expressed itself and followed a different line. This paper aims to present the story of feuilleton from its beginnings, examining it through its development periods, until the end of this alternative literary genre. It’s also aimed to demonstrate how Benito Pérez Galdós made a parody of the genre in his novel “Tormento”. From various aspects it will be convenient to consider this genre as a necessity of the human being in different periods of time. Today the feulllietons have turned into soap operas and photonovels, and it’s obvious that they should not be underestimated, on the contrary, they have to be considered as the cultural aspect of XIXth century.
