A bibliometric study of research concerning nutritional supplements and micronutrients in individuals with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder from 2000 to 2024

Abstract

BackgroundOver the past two decades, research on nutritional interventions for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has increased significantly. However, the biological mechanisms and overall effectiveness of these interventions remain partially understood. This bibliometric analysis maps the research landscape regarding nutritional supplements and micronutrients (excluding broad dietary patterns) from 2000 to 2024 to identify key trends, influential contributors, and future directions.MethodsA total of 1,010 publications were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection on July 6, 2025, comprising 734 original research articles and 276 reviews. Analyses were conducted on country, institution, and author productivity, along with co-citation and keyword frequency.ResultsPublication output steadily increased over the 25-year period. The United States, England, and Italy were the most productive countries, while Harvard University and the University System of Ohio ranked highest among 1,657 institutions. Nutrients emerged as the most influential journal. Rucklidge JJ and Arnold LE were the most prolific authors, and Richardson AJ was the most co-cited. Keyword analysis revealed "ADHD," "children," and "vitamin D" as dominant themes.ConclusionThis analysis highlights a growing global interest in nutritional strategies for managing ADHD. The prominence of key countries, institutions, and journals reflects the field's maturing research base. Future studies are likely to explore how genetic variability, inflammation, and neurodevelopment interact with nutrition. Enhancing international collaboration and interdisciplinary research will be essential for advancing evidence-based nutritional approaches to ADHD.
