Hicrî
ilk asırlardan itibaren Mağrib’ten gelen hacılar için İskenderiye üzerinden
Kahire’ye, daha sonra Yukarı Mısır’a ve Kızıldeniz’in kuzey sahilindeki Ayzâb’a,
şehri üzerinden Kızıldeniz’in kuzeyindeki liman şehri Ayzâb’a, daha sonra deniz
From the first
hijrī centuries, the most popular hajj route for the Maghribī pilgrims was to
travel through Alexandria to Cairo, then to Upper Egypt and ʿAydhāb on the
northern shore of the Red Sea, then to Jidda by sea and finally to Ḥaramayn.
During the seventh/fourteenth century, there were Maghribī scholars who
followed this route for pilgrimage and combined pilgrimage with traveling for
knowledge. One of these scholars, al-Qāsim b. Yūsuf al-Tujībī (d. 730/1329),
compiled a travelogue called Mustafād
al-riḥla wa-al-ightirāb
[The Benefits of Travel and Being Abroad], in which he brought together the literary
genres of riḥla and muʿjam
al-shuyūkh. While the
travel notes written by scholars, pilgrims, merchants, envoy etc. constitute
the genre of riḥla, the works in which scholars compiled the names
and short biographies of their teachers alongside the narrations (marwiyyāt) and texts they had taken from them over the
course of their education were called muʿjam, mashyakha, barnāmaj, fahrasa and thabat. Al-Ṭujībī’s work bears the characteristics of the
riḥla genre in terms of describing his pilgrimage, the
destinations on his route, the physical and socio-economic conditions of the
cities, their history, architectural landmarks and people; and of the muʿjam genre in terms of recording the scholars he
studied with in the cities on his route and the narrations and texts he had
taken from them. Mustafād al-riḥla
was originally
three volumes in length, however, only a certain part of the second volume has
survived. This part covers al-Tujībī’s travel notes in the year of 696 (1296),
starting from Cairo, through the city of Qūṣ to the port city of ʿAydhāb in the
north of the Red Sea, then to Jidda by sea and from there to Mecca. In this
paper, al-Tujībī’s travel, as depicted in Mustafād al-riḥla, will be spatialized through the ArcGIS software.
In addition, the paper evaluates the plan and the style of the work that blends
the riḥla and muʿjam genres and underlines the combinations and
hybridizations of literary genres. Finally, dealing with the scholarly network
established by al-Tujībī in Cairo and Mecca, it scrutinizes the role of hajj
travels in combining religious duty with scholarly activities and the testimony
of Mustafād
al-riḥla to this issue.
