Abstract
Socio-Cultural Interpretation of Music in The Conception of Civilization in Turkish
Modernization The Ottoman Empire accommodated a multitude of cultures on its territories. The knowledge communicated by cultural ambassadors in commercial or political visits helped improve each time and enrich the artistic network the empire was to pass onto future generations. The traditional dynamics of this social memory legacy transformed and sought to expound its knowledge and experience through artistic channels. The turn of the 20th century saw the collapse of the empire as the republic was emerged out of its roots. With an eye to abandoning the musical currents of the past, new political establishments instead sought to look beyond their own vanishing line and to take radical decisions on the modernization of “civilization.” These establishments started to intervene in and shape cultural agencies with a new perspective according to the ideological orientation of the Republic. The cultural
project in question held Islamic Civilization and the traditional legacy of the Ottoman Civilization out of its road map, coded in its reservoir cultural patterns fi ltered through especially Western Europe and positioned them under the Republic of Turkey. In cultural terms, early twentieth century saw the beginning of a changed, transformed era ruled by freer expression. As rationalization dominated every fi eld, music grew simpler while new approaches sought to standardize it. Actually, as a consequence of the Ottoman-Turkish modernization, this process emerged in the earlier years of the eighteenth century. The centrist, intellectual despotic reforms of Selim III and Mahmud II had an impact on not only political and military establishments but cultural establishments as well. This paper traces the various meanings of conceptualizations developed by intellectuals of the late Ottoman period such as “Islamic Civilization”, “The Association between Civilization and the East” and “European Civilization” as well as how music is interpreted in socio-cultural terms at the time.
