Özet

This study aims to help in the understanding of the similarities and differences in the perception of death in Korean and Turkish euphemisms. The perception of birth and death is the source of worldview. Birth and death, which mark the beginning and end of an individual's existence, are the most primordial events that shape worldviews. A contrastive study of the linguistic expressions of death that have been used over time in linguistic life will give us a glimpse into the roots and worldview of each culture. There are many similarities between Korea and Turkiye in many cultural aspects. Through the similarities in the expressions of death in both cultures, we will examine the close connection between them in their perception of finite life. By identifying the differences, new challenges for genuine mutual understanding may be offered. Furthermore, the most primitive expressions of death and their perceptions are extended and applied in new forms to other cultural phenomena, and thus play a crucial role in the deeper interaction between the two cultures. To this end, we will compare traditional and long-standing proverbs related to death, and discuss the semantic expansion of idiomatic expressions centered on the verbs “to die”.
