International Mediterranean Survey Workshop, Palermo, Italy, 2 - 03 December 2016, (Summary Text)
Paleolithic Survey at Kureyşler (Kutahya), NW Anatolia Berkay Dinçer Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Prehistory Section, Laleli, Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey berkaydincer@gmail.com Intensive pedestrian survey in Kureyşler valley revealed 30 sites with Paleolithic artifacts. Most of the sites generally point to an old Middle Paleolithic flake technology where the use of prepared core (Levallois) technology is at minimum. Rich flint sources in the area might have attracted Middle Paleolithic hominins. Large Paleolithic workshops are located very close to flint sources. Other types of Middle Paleolithic sites distributed more randomly in the terrain. Since none of the Paleolithic sites in the area are archaeologically in situ, we did not collect artifacts using techniques like setting squares nor dog leash. However it is still possible to evaluate the density using GPS tracks and total number of artifacts from each site, and also possible function of the sites using techno-typology of the artifacts along with their density. This revealed that there are at least five different Paleolithic site types in the area. Closely related to flint sources are dense workshops, dense workshops that were also used as activity areas and ad hoc flaking and activity areas. In addition to these, there are large, loosely scattered activity areas and single find sites that are not related to flint sources.
