In this retrospective study, relationships between histopatological findings and serum ALT and AST levels and HBeAg status, were examined in a group of hepatitis B with young male adult patients. The records of 683 patients with HBV infections who had not previously been treated were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were divided into two groups according to the HBeAg status (Group 1; HBeAg positive, Group 2; HBeAg negative). Fibrosis staging and activity grades were assigned according to the Knodell scoring system. According the histopatologic findings, chronic HBV status were 198 (83%) in group 1 and 285 (60%) in group 2 (p<0,0001). Mean age was 23,18 in group 1 and 25,87 in group 2 (p<0.0001). The mean ALT and AST values were 120,4IU/ml and 51,60IU/ml in group 1 while 77,11IU/ml and 38,62IU/ml in group 2 (p<0,0001 and p<0,0001). The mean histologic activity index was 4,78 in group 1 and 4,06 in group 2 (p=0,001). There was no significant relationship regarding to fibrosis score, in both group. This study revealed that HBeAg negative chronic hepatitis is significantly higher than HBeAg positive status in young Turkish male. Monitoring ALT levels seems to be a reliable marker of disease activity in HBV infected patients.
