Özet
Purpose: The present article examines the relationship between the composition, contents, and functions of 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n sources and tafsir introductions (muqaddim & amacr;t). The study draws a clear distinction between two catagories of works on Qur'& amacr;nic sciences. The first category comprise independent Works, composed from the second century AH onward, and the thematic works that define 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n as a systematic field of knowledge. The second category comprises tafsir introductions, which are positioned in contrast to the systematic 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n sources. The research emphasizes that defining 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n as an epistemological rather than methodological field is a natural consequence of the Islamic scholarly tradition, whereas tafsir introductions are shown to be grounded in methodological principles that have been shaped by that tradition. The presenet study analyzes both early 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n works and a range of tafsir introductions, with a view to comparing their conceptual frameworks, contents, and structural features. This comparison extends beyond not limited to a mere examination of literature or subject matter; rather, it relates the shifts observed in tafsir introductions to the formation of 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n as a codified discipline and to the dynamics of its compilation. Method: Methodologically, the study employs content, discourse, and comparative analysis. The corpus selected for analysis includes the works of al-Zarkashi, al-Bulqini, and al-Suy & umacr;ti, as well as the introductions of major exegetes such as al-Tabari, R & amacr;ghib al-Isfah & amacr;ni, and al-Qurtubi, amang others. Findings: The findings reveal that 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n sources primarily address the nature of the Qur'& amacr;n, its textual features, linguistic and stylistic structures, and the sciences it encompasses at a terminological level. Conversely, tafsir introductions are are characterised by their expansive nature and adaptability, delineating the identity of the exegete, elucidating the fundamental principles of tafsir, and fostering methodological and terminological connections between tafsir and other Islamic sciences. Conclusion: Consequently, it has been determined that the subjects addressed in the introductions to Qur'anic commentaries vary in terms of content and form from the issues discussed in 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n sources. This discrepancy is attributed to the process through which 'ul & umacr;m al-Qur'& amacr;n evolved into a systematic discipline.
