Özet

An echocardiographic study. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of nicardipine, a calcium channel blocker in patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension. The study material was consisted of 28 patients (11 males, 17 females, mean age 45.4 ± 12 years). After two weeks' placebo period, the values of systolic, diastolic and mean blood pressures measured at rest, and after handgrip isometric exercises test were not significantly changed, but they were significantly reduced after 4 week treatment of nicardipine 20 mg three times dairy (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001). Diastolic blood pressure on supine position reduced below 90 mmHg in 86 % of patients. Heart rate was-not changed after active drug treatment The parameters of left ventricular systolic function (ejection fraction, cardiac index and mean Vcf) and cardiac mass determined by M-mode echocardiography were not significantly altered. There were also no significant differences on blood analyses and ECG findings. Mild and reversible side effects (7 headache, 9 flushing and 1 palpitation) developed in some patients. We conclude that nicardipine is an effective and safe first step antihypertensive drug in the treatment of mild to moderate essential hypertension.
