The examples of authentic historical urban and rural areas of Anatolia are gradually diminishing day by day. Extensive researches on physical and historical developments of these areas aiming to increase the awareness and diligence of conservation studies should be done immediately. The town of Arapgir with many cultural and architectural heritage which is part of Malatya province in Turkey can be given as an example of imperilment values of Anatolia.
Urban and rural areas of Arapgir, monumental buildings, historical housing and commercial regions and structures of all area have been analyzed intensively. Authentic local construction systems and unique architectural details, construction materials, application habits and intangible cultural heritages are also included in the study. As a part of traditional rural architecture research in Arapgir, field studies are focused on Onar, Ormansırtı (Cücügen) and Koru (Tebte) villages which have intense architectural heritage and traditional housing culture. In behalf of comprehension and documentation of Arapgir’s rural housing and architectural layout, pre-specified historical buildings in these areas were examined and 1/200 scaled survey drawings were prepared. In addition to these studies for the determination of rural settlement identities, many different documentation analyses and silhouette drawings of traditional streets were prepared.
In consequence of this study, documentation of historical development, physical condition and sociocultural structure of Arapgir have been materialized. Main characteristics of architectural textures in urban and rural areas of Arapgir are revealed. It is aimed to provide effective and sustainable solutions to identified conservation problems.
Literature researches for the area did not reveal a comprehensive academic study about the region, except for a few published articles on the monumental buildings of Arapgir. In the scope of the study, emergent historical data, typological classifications specific to local architecture, layout drawings, details of traditional construction system, specific building materials and areas of use, nomenclature of localities and terminological information shall be documented and prevented from being lost and transferred to future generations in order to carry out similar works in the following years.
