PERSPECTIVES (LONDON, 1997) POLICY AND PRACTICE IN HIGHER EDUCATION, ss.1-12, 2026 (Scopus)
Research Management and Administration (RMA) is an emerging profession for improving research performance and funding. Despite its importance, educational opportunities in RMA are still scarce and fragmented. This study aims to explore the current structure of RMA education through a benchmarking analysis of existing master’s and certificate programmes to identify what the main strengths and gaps are in addressing educational needs. 14 programmes (four master’s and ten certificates) were analysed based on their course structure, curriculum content, learning outcomes and certification standards. Results show that master’s programmes focus on strategic skills, while certificate programmes focus more on practical skills. Emerging trends and soft skill-oriented courses are underrepresented in both. Findings highlight the need for a standardised curriculum tailored to RMAs and contribute to the pathway toward accredited RMA education. The study relies on secondary data, and future research could include qualitative insights from RMAs to enrich the findings.
