Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME), which are closely related with women, should be extended in public both as the conservative treatment of incontinence and a preventive health behavior. Health personnel have significant responsibilities in this regard. It was planned to determine the assessment of midwifery students in knowledge, practice and teaching states of PFME.

Material And Method: This is a descriptive study planned to be performed between October-2010 and November-2010. Study sample included all midwifery students Midwifery Department of one public university in Istanbul. The study was composed of 80 individuals who agreed to participate in the study until November 2010. Data was collected by the researchers through face-to-face method using a survey form developed according to literature.   In   the   analysis   of   the   obtained   data,   SPSS   13   packet   software   was    used. Findings: The ages of midwifery student participants ranged between 20 and 29 with a mean of 22±1,51. All of the participants stated that they knew about PFME; however 32.5% (n=26) did not share this knowledge with women around them and the women in clinical practice fields. Among the participants, 38.8% stated that they did not have enough knowledge of PFME; 17.5% thought that women would not understand it and 38.8% neglected sharing information about PFME with other women. Considering participants? practice of PFME, the rate of those who applied it in any period of their lives was 78.8% while 21.3% never applied it. The reason for not applying  it  was  negligence  with  a  rate  of  22.5%  and  inability  to  make  it  a  habit  (60%). Conclusion: It was concluded that midwifery students included in the study had high knowledge level on PFME; however, they were inadequate to apply and teach the exercises to other women.
